In any green power generation scenario, it makes considerably more sense to use easily transported, energy-dense bio-oil than raw biomass. Since bio-oil can be stored, there exists the opportunity to peak fire a turbine or to direct or co-fire a traditional boiler / steam turbine configuration, providing further environmental and commercial benefits.

Orenda, a division of Magellan Aerospace, has developed biomass turbines specifically for Ensyn bio-oil applications. The turbines are available to generate from 1 to 25 MW, and produce green electricity in an efficiency range of 29% to 41%, depending upon configuration. This makes the turbines a viable and exciting alternative for distributed power generation.
